I know it sounds stupid and petty, but I really admire the way Hussie’s writing the dialogue currently to distinguish it from the Pesterlogs. I noticed this during the first intermission too, but it’s even more obvious in the latest update. Both Rose and Dave (and to an extent Kanaya) talk slightly differently in person to the way they do over Pesterchum.

DAVE: i told you about can town didnt i
ROSE: No??

ROSE: Do you want to hear about it?
DAVE: uh
DAVE: now?

DAVE: im gonna make myself a cup of coffee and get primed to listen to you saying a lot of stuff like that
DAVE: do you want some
ROSE: Um. Sure.

As someone who’s spent a fuck of a lot of time bashing his head against Dave/Rose dialogue trying to get it exactly right (but still can’t), all of these would normally stick out a mile for me. It’s more natural, more hesitant, less arch and complex. Rose uses fewer long words. Dave relies less on sustained analogies. It brings out vocal tone better (Dave using question marks, Rose using double question marks). It sounds like two people talking, rather than typing. Rose expresses her frustration by saying ‘Oh my God. I’ve told you. I can’t see the future!’, sounding rather like an annoyed fourteen-year-old girl, rather than Dorothy Parker on a Lovecraft jag. (In Pesterlog that line would have been
TT: Dave, as I’ve repeatedly attempted to explain, actual prognostication is scarcely within my remit.
TT: I’ve told you, bro.
TT: I’ve told you about Seers.)

And then of course we get jokes like ‘moirail? mwah rail…’ which would be impossible within Pesterlog format, and Hussie’s slipping them in here just to remind us that hey, look, this stuff is being vocalised now. (Also suggests I may have been too swift to rubbish Dave’s French pronunciation.)

tl;dr, Hussie continues to be a really good writer and I am well impressed.

And while I am not happy with how Hussie is writing the dialogue in regards to the passage of time - which I am waiting for a few more updates before I start complaining about - I will say I like seeing the kids talk like kids, as well as being able to wax poetically. It helps make them that much more believable for me, and honestly they’re too damn cute in this not to appreciate their 14year old silliness.

Yeah I really like the way this lays it out!  and it honestly makes me feel better about the last update when you look at it like this.  I really do appreciate how Hussie writes the kids differently since they’re now talking face to face instead of mediated communication.  It speaks volumes to how good a writer he is that he can make that slight shift.  And yes, ohmigosh they are so incredibly adorable.  If it’s one this these new updates have reminded me of is how young the kids really are because personally I think they come off as a lot older in their pesterlogs.

But yeah, I do agree the passage of time thing does seem a little weird but I guess we’ll see where it goes…
